Statement of Intent – OPAL Play at John Perryn Primary School
At John Perryn Primary School we recognise that play is a fundamental part of childhood and an essential component of children’s physical, emotional and social development. Through our commitment to the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Programme, we aim to create a rich, inclusive and engaging play environment where every child can thrive.
We believe that high-quality play opportunities positively impact wellbeing, resilience, creativity and learning. Our intention is to ensure that all children have access to safe, stimulating and varied outdoor play experiences during lunch and break times.
Through the OPAL Programme, we will:
- Develop our outdoor spaces to provide diverse and imaginative play opportunities.
- Encourage children to explore, take appropriate risks and develop independence.
- Promote cooperation, problem solving and social interaction through play.
- Ensure play is inclusive and accessible for all children regardless of age, ability or background.
- Involve pupils, staff, parents and the wider community in shaping and improving our play provision.
We recognise that play is a child’s natural way of learning. By investing in high-quality play environments and resources, we aim to improve children’s happiness, behaviour, physical activity levels and readiness to learn in the classroom.
Our commitment to the OPAL Programme reflects our belief that play times should be valued as an essential part of the school day, supporting children to develop confidence, creativity and lifelong wellbeing.
